Courts give smaller wireless carriers a gift

Smaller wireless carriers should be dancing in the streets tonight after a federal appeals court rejected Verizon’s arguments against the Federal Communication Commission’s wireless data roaming rules. Earlier today, the U.S Court of Appeals in Washington, D.C., upheld rules that the FCC had enacted a year ago that will require large wireless operators such as AT&T and Verizon Wireless to strike “commercially reasonable” roaming deals on their 4G LTE networks with any wireless operator interested in using a competitor’s network to expand territory. Verizon took issue with these rules, which are similar to rules the FCC adopted in 2007 that require voice roaming.

NASA announces plans for new $1.5 billion Mars rover

(Credit: NASA) In an ongoing effort to restructure its Mars exploration program in the wake of deep budget cuts announced earlier this year, NASA announced plans Tuesday to send a new $1.5 billion rover to the red planet in 2020 based on the design of the agency’s hugely successful Curiosity. The as-yet-unnamed rover is the second new Mars mission announced in the wake of the budget cuts that will be built using already-existing designs, a money-saving architecture agency officials say is more in line with current funding reality.

AOL snaps up advertising company Buysight

AOL upped its advertising cache today by announcing that it bought Buysight, an ad company that focuses on retargeted and intent-based targeted advertising. Buysight will be folded into AOL’s Advertising.com Group. This group works on ad technology for desktop, mobile, tablets, and Internet connected televisions
