The party as a whole fluctuated around Herman Cain, then Rick Perry, then Newt Gingrich, then Rick Santorum, and finally settled with Mitt Romney. They have also struggled? with deciding to be either exremely conservative or to moderate their beliefs this elections cycle. Although the emergence of the Tea Party did energize the Republican Base, it has put into question what the Republican party actually believes in.
